카카오톡 오픈채팅에 '음성 대화' 기능 도입.
카카오가 카카오톡 오픈채팅에 음성 대화 기능인 '보이스룸'을 선보였다. 화면 속 화면(PIP) 기능을 활용해 음성, 텍스트 대화를 동시에 진행할 수도 있다. 보이스룸은 그룹 오픈채팅방에서 방장, 부방장이 개설할 수 있다. 참여 가능 인원은 최대 1,500명이다.

Kakao introduced 'Voice Room', a voice chat function for KakaoTalk Open Chat. Using the picture-in-picture (PIP) function, you can have both voice and text conversations at the same time. The voice room can be opened by the moderator and vice-chairman in the group open chat room. The maximum number of participants is 1,500.
Umm 서비스 종료(실패) 이후, 이미 개발된 실시간 음성 소통 기능을 기존의 카카오톡으로 활용하는 모습이다. 기존 카카오톡 오픈채팅방은 서로 잘 모르는 사람들 간에 모여있는 큰 그룹과도 같았다. 채팅만으로도 서로의 어색함을 해결하기에 시간이 걸렸던 모습을 보였다. 음성이나 영상은 더욱 서로 간의 부담감이 느껴지는 소통방식이다. 더해서, 채팅만으로도 대형 오픈채팅에서는 하루만 안읽어도 최소 100건 이상의 대화가 쌓이게 된다. 보이스룸의 개설이 디스코드의 분산된 음성소통 채널 방식과 비슷하게 운영되지 않는다면, 최대 1500명까지 수용 가능한 하나의 채널에서 실시간 음성 소통은 거의 불가능하거나 무의미할 것으로 바라본다.
