Ex-deputy prime minister takes helm of troubled ruling party

Hwang Woo-yea, the former deputy prime minister during 2014-16, has been chosen to temporarily lead the ruling People Power Party following its significant loss in the April 10 general election. At 77 years old, Hwang will assume leadership until a new party leader is selected at an upcoming convention, which is expected to take place several months from now. Prior to his political career, Hwang served as a judge in Seoul before being elected as a member of the Assembly in 1996 with the major conservative party. The previous party chair, Han Dong-hoon, resigned after the election, and Hwang has been deemed a suitable replacement by his colleagues in the ruling party. Party floor leader Rep. Yun Jae-ok highlighted Hwang's capability to chair the party convention fairly and efficiently, as well as his experience with the party's operations and the Assembly. Additionally, Rep. Han Ki-ho, who previously served with Hwang on the party's top decision-making council, described him as a good listener who is open to different perspectives. The ruling party is also preparing to hold an election to replace its floor leadership on Friday.
