First-ever meeting of president, opposition chief set to finally happen

President Yoon Suk Yeol and Rep. Lee Jae-myung, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea, have agreed to meet for the first time since the National Assembly election on April 10. The meeting is scheduled for April 29 at 2 p.m., marking the first encounter between the two rivals since Yoon took office nearly two years ago. Lee intends to use this opportunity to convey the people's message as reflected in the election results, as expressed by his chief secretary Rep. Cheon Jun-ho. The Democratic Party, having secured the largest number of seats in the unicameral assembly with 175 out of 300, successfully maintained its position in the April 10 election. The ruling People Power Party won 108 seats. The decision on the meeting date came after three days of working-level meetings and disagreements over the talks' format and other details. Despite the initial meeting, Lee hinted that it might not be the last and expressed a willingness to meet with the president without any conditions. Additionally, there are expectations for regular meetings between the two leaders, with concerns from the ruling party about the opposition's proposal for universal cash subsidies. The meeting was suggested by the presidential office following the April 10 general election, in which Yoon won against Lee by the narrowest margin in history.
