PPP nominates retired ex-lawmaker to head emergency committee

The ruling People Power Party has appointed Hwang Woo-yea, a retired former lawmaker, to lead an emergency leadership committee responsible for organizing a national convention to elect a new party leader after suffering a significant defeat in recent parliamentary elections. Hwang, who is currently a standing advisor to the party, will be responsible for finalizing the rules for the leadership election ahead of the anticipated national convention in June. PPP's floor leader and acting chairman, Rep. Yun Jae-ok, expressed confidence in Hwang's ability to oversee the convention fairly, citing his extensive political experience and strong reputation within the party. Since the removal of former party chairman Lee Jun-seok in August 2022, the PPP has been under the leadership of an emergency committee. The previous committee, led by Han Dong-hoon, disbanded following the party's electoral setback earlier this month. Hwang, a seasoned politician who previously chaired the Saenuri Party and held positions as prime minister and education minister under former President Park Geun-hye, has been chosen to guide the party through this critical transition.
