Tensions heighten ahead of first president-opposition chief meeting

Tensions between the ruling People Power Party and the Democratic Party of Korea have heightened ahead of the first official meeting between President Yoon Suk Yeol and Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung. The ruling party expressed doubt about the sincerity of Lee's request for the meeting, questioning whether it was driven by genuine concern for the people or merely a pretext for political conflict. The ruling party also criticized the opposition's plan to convene an extraordinary plenary session to pass pending bills, accusing them of aiming to misuse taxpayers' money and ruling with dictatorship. The spokesperson for the Democratic Party emphasized the public's demand for a shift in national policy and urged President Yoon to respond to these sentiments. They also called for President Yoon to accept special prosecutor investigations and refrain from vetoing measures passed by the National Assembly. With the main opposition party holding a majority in the Assembly following the recent elections, it is suggested that President Yoon must collaborate with Lee to avoid being perceived as ineffective. The upcoming meeting between Yoon and Lee is said to be crucial in addressing the nation's challenges and restoring public trust.
