Yoon deserves Nobel Peace Prize for resolving historical issues with Japan: Campbell

Kurt Campbell, the deputy secretary of state for the United States, praised President Yoon Suk Yeol's efforts to resolve historical conflicts with Japan and improve bilateral relations, which subsequently laid the foundation for the trilateral relationship between Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo as established in the Camp David summit in August. Campbell, who previously served as the top Asia aide in the Joe Biden administration, emphasized the pivotal roles played by Yoon and Kishida in addressing Japan's past atrocities towards South Koreans and managing the instabilities in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly stemming from North Korea. He even suggested that the two leaders deserve a joint Nobel Peace Prize for their significant accomplishments, citing the political courage required for such endeavors. Campbell also commended Yoon's bold declaration in March 2023 to move past historical grievances with Japan, acknowledging the immense difficulty in overcoming such issues due to entrenched interest and political groups in both countries. He highlighted the importance of fostering cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan to further strengthen their trilateral relationship. Additionally, Campbell expressed confidence in the liberal opposition parties in Korea to continue building on these diplomatic efforts, alluding to the Democratic Party of Korea's potential role in this process. South Korea has previously had a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in the late former president Kim Dae-jung, recognized for his contributions to reconciliation between the two Koreas after decades of confrontation following the Korean War. Campbell's remarks underscore the significance of the recent diplomatic developments and the potential for continued progress in the trilateral relationship.
