Yoon, opposition leader set for first-ever meeting

The photograph depicts President Yoon Suk Yeol and opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, both of whom are scheduled to engage in their first-ever meeting on Monday. This encounter will serve as a litmus test for the extent to which the two parties are willing to collaborate on political and governmental matters. The meeting is set to take place at the presidential office at 2 p.m., with each participant accompanied by three aides and no predetermined agenda. President Yoon proposed the meeting following the defeat of the ruling People Power Party in the April 10 parliamentary elections, resulting in the Democratic Party gaining control of the National Assembly. The upcoming discussion is anticipated to focus on improving people's livelihoods, with the Democratic Party also viewing it as an opportunity to advocate for changes in the principles of state affairs. President Yoon emphasized that he intends to listen to Chairman Lee Jae-myung's perspectives, without imposing any restrictions on the agenda. As President Yoon will have to collaborate with an opposition-controlled National Assembly for the remainder of his term, cooperation with the opposition bloc has become increasingly crucial. It is expected that Lee will urge the president to fulfill his election promise of providing 250,000 won ($182) to each citizen, refrain from vetoing DP-led bills, and support a special counsel investigation into the death of a Marine. There is also interest in whether Lee will raise the issue of pursuing a special counsel investigation into allegations of stock price manipulation involving the first lady, Kim Keon Hee.
