22nd Assembly begins new 4-year term

The 22nd National Assembly has commenced its new four-year term, with the Democratic Party holding a majority of 175 seats in the 300-member parliament, setting the stage for a contentious partisan struggle against the conservative leader and his party, which holds 108 seats. The assembly will convene its first plenary session on June 5 to elect a new speaker, with the Democratic Party nominating five-term lawmaker Woo Won-shik for the role. The two rival parties are already at odds over the chairmanship of key parliamentary committees, raising concerns about their ability to collaborate on unresolved issues from the previous parliament. The Democratic Party has pledged to reintroduce bills that were previously blocked by the People Power Party and President Yoon Suk Yeol, including a special probe into the Yoon administration's handling of a young marine's death during a search mission. Additionally, they plan to propose a bill for civil support payments based on income levels. The People Power Party is set to propose its first bill following a strategy workshop, while other parties like the Rebuilding Korea Party and the New Reform Party have expressed their determination to actively participate in the new assembly term.
