Controversy brews over shakeup of prosecutors amid probe of first lady

The recent unexpected reorganization of senior prosecutors announced by the Yoon Suk Yeol administration has sparked intense debate between the main rival parties. The opposition has criticized the move, claiming it is an effort to obstruct the ongoing investigation into the luxury Dior bag scandal involving first lady Kim Keon Hee. The Justice Ministry appointed Lee Chang-soo, head of the Jeonju District Prosecutors' Office and a close aide to Yoon, as the new chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office. This change is seen in connection to the high-profile investigation into Yoon's wife, which was led by the current chief, Song Kyung-ho. The reshuffle involved a total of 39 people, including the relocation of all four deputy chief prosecutors under Song. Prosecutor General Lee One-seok stated that the prosecution will continue the investigation solely based on existing evidence and legal principles. However, he declined to comment on whether the presidential office had adequately discussed the reshuffle with the prosecution beforehand. The opposition Democratic Party of Korea accused the reshuffle of creating a shield for the first lady during the probe, while the ruling People Power Party defended it as necessary to fill vacancies within the prosecution. The reshuffle coincided with the prosecution's interrogation of Korean American pastor Choi Jae-young, who is accused of gifting a luxury Dior handbag to Kim Keon Hee. This occurred as the Democratic Party pushed for a special counsel investigation into the suspicions surrounding the first lady's actions, while President Yoon hinted at using his veto power to oppose such a move.
