DP leader demands ruling party's cooperation after Yoon vetoes special counsel probe bill

During a party Supreme Council meeting, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung criticized President Yoon Suk Yeol for vetoing a bill that called for a special counsel investigation into the military's handling of a Marine's death. Lee urged the ruling party to cooperate in repassing the bill, emphasizing the need to address what he described as "bad politics" that overlook the death of a citizen. He warned that the ruling People Power Party would be remembered as accomplices of an atrocious government if they continued to defend the president and oppose the bill. President Yoon exercised his veto power in response to the bill, which was rushed through the opposition-controlled National Assembly on May 2. The bill aimed to investigate allegations of inappropriate interference by Yoon's office and the defense ministry in the Marines' investigation into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun. Additionally, the People Power Party raised concerns about a solo visit by former first lady Kim Jung-sook to the Taj Mahal in India in 2018, questioning the use of public funds and calling for a special counsel probe. This move was criticized by the Democratic Party as an attempt to deflect attention from allegations regarding the current first lady Kim Keon Hee's receipt of a luxury handbag as a gift in 2022.
