[From the Scene] Global transport leaders call for greener moves

Global leaders in the transportation sector have emphasized the need to prioritize environmentally friendly transportation in the face of the interconnected challenges of climate change, public health, and geopolitical instability. During the International Transport Forum's annual summit in Leipzig, Germany, ITF Secretary General Kim Young-tae highlighted the urgency of addressing the "polycrisis" by moving beyond simply reducing emissions and focusing on the existential threat of global warming. He stressed the transport sector's responsibility to transition to zero emissions and adapt to extreme weather events, while also emphasizing the importance of equity in shaping mobility policies. The summit, which drew over 1,200 participants from ministerial-level delegations, international organizations, and businesses, provided a platform for discussions on sustainable mobility and climate-resilient transport systems. German Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Volker Wissing emphasized the need for collaborative efforts across the political, economic, industrial, and academic sectors to make bold decisions. South Korea's delegation presented its plan to reduce carbon emissions and efforts to transition to electric and hydrogen vehicles, with Hyundai Motor Group showcasing its initiatives in hydrogen buses and cargo vehicles as decarbonizing solutions. The ITF, established in 2006, has grown to include 66 member countries and serves as a key intergovernmental body for addressing global transport challenges.
