Global leaders recently came together to adopt the "Seoul Declaration," which outlines their commitment to promoting safe, innovative, and inclusive artificial intelligence (AI) in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. The declaration, established during a virtual leaders' session at the AI Seoul Summit, aims to address the wide array of opportunities and challenges presented by the design, development, deployment, and utilization of AI. It stresses the interconnectedness of AI safety, innovation, and inclusivity, emphasizing the need to incorporate these priorities into international discussions on AI governance. The session saw the participation of leaders from major countries and international organizations, as well as prominent private sector entities like Google DeepMind, Samsung Electronics, Naver, OpenAI, Amazon Web Services, and Meta. During the summit, Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong expressed a commitment to advancing safe, innovative, and inclusive AI technology, highlighting the importance of responsible AI development and utilization. Additionally, Naver's founder and global investment officer, Lee Hae-jin, emphasized the significance of creating diverse AI models that consider cultural and environmental contexts, and announced the company's plan to unveil an AI safety framework in the near future. Looking ahead, an in-person ministerial session is scheduled to take place to discuss actions aimed at strengthening AI safety and achieving sustainability and resilience. The AI Seoul Summit represents a notable progression from previous efforts, with the Seoul Declaration underscoring the increased global focus on identifying AI risks and the importance of aligning AI governance frameworks with a risk-based approach to maximize benefits and address potential risks. It is expected that the summit will contribute to advancing AI norms and governance on a global scale, building on existing initiatives such as the Digital Bill of Rights, the UN General Assembly's AI resolution, and the Hiroshima AI process at the G7 level.
