HD Hyundai and Shell to collaborate on next-gen liquefied hydrogen carriers

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) recently revealed a collaboration with Shell to advance liquefied hydrogen (LH2) transportation technologies. The partnership involves HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, both crucial components of HHI's shipbuilding sector, signing a joint development agreement with Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Ltd at the Hyundai Global Research and Development Center in Gyeonggi Province. The aim of the partnership is to develop a large-scale LH2 carrier by the 2030s, facilitating the intercontinental transport of hydrogen. This process involves liquefying hydrogen by cooling it to extremely low temperatures to condense it into a liquid state, making it denser and more efficient for long-distance transport, albeit with significant technical challenges. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will utilize its expertise to develop crucial technologies like large LH2 storage tanks and hydrogen cargo operation systems for safe and efficient transport, while HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will focus on developing a hydrogen-powered engine and the overall design of the LH2 carrier. Shell will contribute its extensive knowledge of ship operations and assess the practicality and efficiency of the new carrier designs. Moreover, HD Hyundai is also collaborating with global partners to establish the necessary infrastructure and logistics to support the widespread use of hydrogen as a clean energy source in maritime transport. This includes a memorandum of understanding with Woodside Energy, Hyundai Glovis, and a memorandum of lease to establish a comprehensive LH2 marine transportation value chain. CEO Kim Sung-joon emphasized that the collaboration with Shell will drive the company's progress in green energy with vessels powered by methanol, ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen, while Shell's Senior Vice President Trauth highlighted the company's history of energy-efficient ships and its dedication to innovating with cleaner energy solutions for maritime shipping.
