Korea to send moon rover by 2032, flag on Mars by 2045

South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol has unveiled a blueprint for space exploration, revealing plans to send the first lunar rover by 2032 and plant the first Korean flag on Mars by 2045. The goals are part of the "Space Gwanggaeto Project," named after King Gwanggaeto the Great, and were announced at the Korea AeroSpace Administration's temporary headquarters in Sacheon. President Yoon emphasized the country's ambition to become a leader in space development and commemorate the indomitable spirit of King Gwanggaeto the Great. KASA, officially launched on Monday, aims to usher in a "new space era" by nurturing experts, supporting the aerospace industry ecosystem, and fostering innovative research and development. The administration also plans to designate May 27 as "Aerospace Day" and attract private-sector funding of 100 trillion won to nurture South Korea's space industry. Additionally, President Yoon pledged to increase the 2027 state budget for space exploration to 1.5 trillion won, an 80 percent rise from the current year's budget. Sacheon, Goheung, and Daejeon are identified as the three cities comprising a space industry cluster.
