Minor opposition leader Cho Kuk calls for cut back in Yoon’s term

Cho Kuk, leader of the minor opposition Rebuilding Korea Party, held a press briefing at the National Assembly in Seoul on Friday, where he called for constitutional reform through the incoming parliament. He advocated for the adoption of a two-term, four-year US-style presidential term limit, rather than the current single-term, five-year system. This proposal aligns with the main opposition Democratic Party's earlier suggestion for a similar system, but it is also seen as an effort to curtail President Yoon Suk Yeol's remaining three years in office. Cho emphasized the need for discussions on constitutional reform and outlined seven legislations that should be amended, with changing the presidential term and removing a clause granting prosecutors exclusive right to apply for arrest warrants as the key aspects of his proposal. Despite facing legal challenges, including indictment on charges of bribery and document fraud, Cho has remained active in politics and established his own Rebuilding Korea Party just a month before the April 10 parliamentary elections.
