[New faces of Assembly] Architect behind ‘audacious initiative’ believes in denuclearized North Korea

The Korea Herald interviews newly elected National Assembly members chosen by South Koreans to discuss their visions and perspectives on issues in Seoul and beyond. Kim Gunn, recently elected as a lawmaker, emphasizes that achieving complete denuclearization of North Korea is a realistic goal for both South Korea and the US. He highlights the significance of an all-encompassing approach to denuclearization, which includes addressing North Korea's security concerns and offering economic incentives. Kim also stresses the need to build public confidence in measures to prevent North Korea from using nuclear weapons and believes that a nuclear-armed South Korea could diminish North Korea's willingness to relinquish its nuclear capabilities. With extensive experience in North Korean nuclear diplomacy and security, Kim aims to continue efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and enhance South Korea's diplomatic position as a member of the Assembly. He also plans to address cyber threats by advocating for the passage of a cyber security bill. Despite potential political differences, Kim emphasizes the importance of bipartisan collaboration to advance legislative efforts that serve national interests. Kim Gunn, a seasoned diplomat specializing in North Korean nuclear issues, served as South Korea's special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs before being elected to the National Assembly in February. His extensive career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs includes key roles in nuclear negotiations with Pyongyang and diplomatic positions in the US, China, and the UK, all significant players in North Korean nuclear affairs.
