[New faces of Assembly] Architect behind ‘audacious initiative’ believes in denuclearized North Korea

In this series, The Korea Herald interviews newly elected members of the National Assembly in South Korea to discuss their visions and perspectives on issues in Seoul and beyond. Kim Gunn, a recent addition to the Assembly, emphasized the importance of complete denuclearization of North Korea as a feasible goal for the security efforts of both South Korea and the US. He highlighted the open opportunity for North Korea to denuclearize and discussed an initiative designed to address the country's security concerns and economic offers. Kim also expressed skepticism about North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons, citing the country's unrealistic ambitions and its flawed perception of international relations. He addressed the idea of South Korea having its own nuclear weapons, noting that it deviates from mainstream thinking in Seoul and Washington and could potentially lead to increased tensions and a nuclear standoff on the Korean Peninsula. Additionally, he discussed the potential impact of the US presidential election on negotiations with North Korea, emphasizing the consistent commitment of the US to denuclearization regardless of the administration in power. As a member of the National Assembly, Kim emphasized his commitment to continuing efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and enhance South Korea's diplomatic standing. He also highlighted the need for bipartisan cooperation in advancing legislative efforts that serve national interests, particularly in the realm of cyber security, where he aims to push for the passage of a bill to defend against cyber threats from adversaries. Kim's extensive background in diplomacy and security issues related to North Korea positions him as a key figure in shaping South Korea's approach to these critical matters.
