Revote on Marine probe bill to be held next week

Outgoing National Assembly Speaker Rep. Kim Jin-pyo announced plans to schedule a revote on a vetoed bill that calls for a special counsel investigation into alleged state interference in a military probe. Kim intends to hold an extraordinary plenary meeting for the revote on May 28, despite the differing stances of the two major political parties. The bill, vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol, grants the opposition party the exclusive authority to recommend candidates for a special counsel to investigate allegations of government interference in the investigation of the death of Marine Cpl. Chae Su-geun. If the bill does not receive approval from two-thirds of lawmakers, it could be completely scrapped before the current term of the Assembly ends. In response, main opposition Democratic Party of Korea leader Rep. Lee Jae-myung criticized President Yoon's use of the veto and urged ruling party lawmakers to vote in favor of the bill during the planned revote, regardless of party lines. Lee warned that the ruling party could be historically labeled as supporters of an oppressive government if they continue to defend Yoon's actions.
