S. Korea’s finance chief in talks for China visit

South Korean Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok announced that he is in discussions for bilateral meetings with his Japanese and Chinese counterparts, in the wake of the recent trilateral summit in Seoul. He disclosed that talks are underway for a potential visit to China after receiving an invitation from the Chinese government and also mentioned an agreement to hold a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart, with the hope that it will take place in Korea. These plans follow the trilateral summit between South Korea, Japan, and China, where the leaders agreed to enhance collaboration in various areas and create consultative bodies to strengthen their partnership. Choi's announcement about the planned bilateral meetings with Japanese and Chinese counterparts comes after the trilateral summit held in Seoul, marking the first meeting of its kind in over four years. During the summit, the leaders agreed to expand cooperation in areas such as human exchange, sustainable growth, trade, welfare, digital transformation, and crisis response. They also committed to establishing consultative bodies in fields like education, culture, tourism, and agriculture to deliver tangible outcomes in their trilateral partnership. Choi emphasized the need to address various challenges that arose during the period of ministerial and working-level meetings between the relevant ministries, indicating the importance of addressing these issues in future discussions.
