Samsung replaces semiconductor chief amid heightened AI race

Samsung Electronics has named Jun Young-hyun as the new head of its semiconductor business, a move believed to be aimed at bolstering its market position in the face of increasing competition in the artificial intelligence chip sector. This change comes as Samsung grapples with challenges in its chip business, particularly in the production of high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips crucial for AI tools, where it faces tough competition from industry leader SK hynix. Jun, a Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology graduate with extensive experience in the semiconductor and battery sectors, has been chosen to lead the company's future business planning team. Notably, he previously played a significant role in the growth of Samsung's chip and battery businesses, as well as in turning around Samsung SDI's fortunes, overcoming challenges such as the Galaxy Note 7 battery ignition issue. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage his wealth of management experience to enhance Samsung's chip business competitiveness and navigate the uncertain global business environment.
