Senior diplomats of S. Korea, Japan discuss bilateral ties, N. Korea in Washington

South Korean and Japanese senior diplomats held a 70-minute luncheon meeting in Washington to discuss bilateral relations and North Korea's recent launches of a military spy satellite and ballistic missiles. The meeting between South Korea's First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun and his Japanese counterpart, Masataka Okano, took place ahead of their planned trilateral talks with US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell. They condemned North Korea's recent launches, emphasizing the serious threats they pose to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and internationally. The two diplomats agreed to continue bilateral and trilateral cooperation with the United States on the issue of abductees and detainees in North Korea. In addition to discussing the recent events, the diplomats also exchanged opinions on pending bilateral issues, potentially addressing the dispute over Naver Corp.'s stake in the operator of the popular messenger Line in Japan. They also committed to working closely to maintain the momentum of trilateral cooperation with China, following the recent three-way leaders' summit in Seoul.
