South Korea, China to open channel on security, resume FTA talks


President Yoon Suk Yeol and Chinese Premier Li Qiang met in Seoul and agreed to establish a communication channel for diplomacy and security, as well as to resume negotiations on an expanded free trade agreement. They also decided to open up their markets to include services such as culture and tourism. Yoon urged China to play a role in maintaining peace amidst North Korea's nuclear weapons development and military cooperation with Russia. He emphasized the importance of working together for peace and prosperity in the international community. Li reciprocated the message, expressing China's commitment to mutual respect and cooperation. In a separate summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Yoon highlighted the enhanced exchanges and restored intergovernmental agreements between South Korea and Japan. He expressed satisfaction with the progress in bilateral relations and hoped to reach a historic milestone as the countries approach the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties. Kishida acknowledged the strong communication and trust between the leaders and emphasized the need for enhanced bilateral relations in the face of global challenges. He also expressed hope for deeper cooperation in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific and addressing global challenges effectively.
