Speaker floats dual citizenship as solution to falling births

Kim Jin-pyo, the speaker of South Korea's National Assembly, met with overseas Koreans in Los Angeles to discuss the possibility of allowing multiple citizenships. He expressed his intention to push for legislation that would permit individuals to hold more than one citizenship, citing growing support within the Assembly and government for this initiative. Kim emphasized that enabling multiple citizenships could address Korea's declining birth rates, which currently rank as the lowest in the world. He also advocated for overseas Koreans to be eligible for multiple citizenships upon reaching the age of 40, exempting them from compulsory military service. During the meeting, Kim responded to a request from James An, the president of the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles, to revise citizenship laws and allow overseas Koreans to become multiple citizens. Kim's visit to Los Angeles is part of a larger trip from May 4 to 18, which includes participation in the 10th meeting of MIKTA and stops in Brazil and Argentina.
