Top prosecutor orders speedy investigation into first lady's alleged acceptance of luxury handbag

South Korea's top prosecutor, Lee One-seok, has directed his team to establish a dedicated unit to investigate allegations that first lady Kim Keon Hee received a luxury handbag in 2022. This instruction was given during a regular meeting with Song Kyung-ho, chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office. The first lady has faced criticism after a video surfaced showing her receiving a Christian Dior bag from a Korean American pastor, who had secretly filmed her. Despite a complaint being filed against Kim and President Yoon Suk Yeol, little progress has been seen in the investigation. The ruling People Power Party's defeat in the recent parliamentary elections has prompted the main opposition Democratic Party to pledge a special probe into the various allegations surrounding the first lady. Additionally, Kim has been accused of involvement in manipulating the stock prices of Deutsch Motors Inc., a BMW car dealer in South Korea, between 2009 and 2012. President Yoon Suk Yeol acknowledged that his wife failed to "coldheartedly reject" the gift giver but did not issue an apology. This development follows the ruling party's electoral setback and the opposition's commitment to investigate the first lady's alleged misconduct once the new session of the National Assembly commences later this month.
