XR partnership between LG, Meta falls through

The highly-publicized collaboration between LG Electronics and Meta for an extended reality (XR) device seems to have fallen through, reportedly due to the lukewarm outlook for the XR market. Industry sources revealed that the decision to postpone the XR device was influenced by sluggish sales of earlier models, particularly Apple's Vision Pro, leading to a reevaluation of the partnership. Initially, talks for the XR collaboration began in February when Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan met to discuss potential joint projects, including AI and the metaverse. However, two months into the collaboration, differences emerged in the direction of the joint XR project, ultimately leading to LG's decision to request the end of the partnership. Had the joint project proceeded as planned, LG and Meta's smart headset was expected to launch in 2025 at a price of around $2,000, positioning it as a mid-range option between Meta's Quest Pro and Apple's Vision Pro. The XR market, expected to exhibit strong growth, has faced challenges with the disappointing sales of Apple's Vision Pro, prompting industry players to reassess their XR initiatives. Despite the setback with Meta, LG is reportedly exploring potential partnerships with other companies, with Amazon being cited as a prospective candidate due to its access to extensive media content and over-the-top services through Amazon Prime. LG has been actively pursuing the commercialization of XR devices and established a dedicated XR technology development team within its TV business unit earlier this year.
