Yoon proposes new law for gig, freelance workers

President Yoon Suk Yeol announced on Tuesday that his government has put forth a law to safeguard the rights of what he referred to as "underprivileged workers" in South Korea. This includes gig workers, independent contractors, and freelancers who often lack job security and essential benefits provided to regular employees under the country's Labor Standards Act. The proposed legislation aims to protect the rights of these workers, such as delivery drivers for food and packages, by establishing a "delivery service mutual aid society" to provide financial aid in case of illness, injury, or unemployment. Additionally, the law will create a dispute arbitration council and standard employment contract for these workers. President Yoon also called for the establishment of a separate "labor court" to handle labor violations and pledged a special inspection of employers who fail to pay gig workers or independent contractors on time. Furthermore, the Labor Ministry will set up a dedicated unit for gig workers and independent contractors. The announcement was made during the 25th policy debate session, attended by contingent workers, and President Yoon plans to organize similar sessions in other regions of South Korea.
