Yoon rebuffs opposition's call for special probe into wife

President Yoon Suk Yeol rejected the opposition's proposal for a special independent counsel investigation into allegations of stock manipulation and anti-graft law violations involving his wife. While apologizing for his wife's acceptance of a luxury bag from a Korean American pastor, Yoon emphasized that such extensive probes should only occur if the official prosecutorial investigation is deemed insufficient. He expressed concern that the opposition's proposal implied that the previous administration had turned a blind eye to him and his wife. The top prosecutor recently launched a special task force to investigate allegations that Yoon's wife violated the country's anti-graft law by accepting the luxury handbag. The main opposition party had drafted and passed an updated version of a special investigation bill into the first lady, which includes anti-graft allegations in addition to the stock manipulation accusations. Meanwhile, a civic group's Secretary General appeared before prosecutors for questioning as part of their probe into the first lady, and has accused the Korean American pastor involved of trespassing and obstruction of justice.
