Yoon revives civil affairs office as first lady faces investigation

President Yoon Suk Yeol has reinstated the position of senior presidential secretary for civil affairs, appointing former prosecutor Kim Joo-hyun to the role. The position, previously abolished by Yoon two years ago, has sparked speculation about its potential use in addressing legal issues involving Yoon and his family, particularly in light of a probe into a "Dior bag scandal" involving Yoon's wife. Yoon emphasized that the decision to revive the position was made to better collect public opinion and serve the South Korean people, while Kim expressed his commitment to reflecting public opinion in policy direction. The revival of the civil affairs office is part of a broader reorganization of the presidential office staff, with Yoon appointing political heavyweights to key positions. Despite Yoon's previous opposition to the senior secretary for civil affairs role, the appointment of Kim marks a reversal of his stance. The move has raised questions about the office's authority over the prosecution and police, with a senior official affirming that nominee Kim will lead the office with a clear vision. Additionally, the office will encompass work supervised by the presidential secretary for civil service discipline, the secretary for legal affairs, and the secretary for civil affairs, with specific individuals appointed to these roles.
