Yoon vetoes 4 contentious bills, including on supporting victims of home rental scams

President Yoon Suk Yeol has vetoed four controversial bills, marking his 11th to 14th vetoes since assuming office two years ago. These bills were passed by the opposition-controlled National Assembly despite objections from the ruling People Power Party. The President exercised his veto power by endorsing motions demanding the National Assembly to reconsider the bills before the end of its term, as vetoed bills cannot be revoted by the incoming Assembly. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo expressed concern about the potential financial burden and social conflicts that these bills could cause if enforced. Additionally, a fifth bill extending support for victims of the 2014 Sewol ferry sinking was promulgated by the Cabinet, despite expectations that the government would reject all five bills. The remaining four bills cover various contentious issues, including support for victims of home rental scams, benefits for former pro-democracy activists, assistance for farmers of premium beef cattle, and the establishment of a representative group for farmers and fishermen. The ruling and opposition parties continue to clash over these bills, setting the stage for further contentious debates in the upcoming 22nd National Assembly.
