Yoon vetos bill for special probe into young Marine's death

President Yoon Suk Yeol has vetoed a bill for a special counsel investigation into government interference in the probe of a Marine's death, marking the 10th bill vetoed during his two years in office. The veto came after Prime Minister Han Duck-soo urged Yoon to do so, criticizing the bill for undermining impartiality and the judiciary system's confidence. The bill had been passed by the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea, while the ruling People Power Party's lawmakers protested by walking out during the vote. The Yoon administration is accused of pressuring the Marine Corps' internal investigator to drop charges against a division commander in the case of Corporal Chae Su-geun's death during a search and rescue operation in July 2023. The Democratic Party, which holds the majority in the National Assembly, has seen several of its bills vetoed by Yoon, including measures related to rice management, nursing regulations, labor rights, media influence, and corruption scandals. Despite the opposition parties' efforts, none of the vetoed bills have been overridden due to the lack of sufficient seats in the National Assembly. Yoon's use of the veto power now places him second only to President Syngman Rhee in the number of bills vetoed in South Korean presidential history.
