Yoon's office to set up task force to keep growth momentum

The presidential office will form a pangovernmental task force to safeguard the nation's strategic industries and promote collaboration among government entities, in response to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's upward revision of South Korea's economic growth projection for this year. Director of national policy for President Yoon Suk Yeol, Sung Tae-yoon, emphasized the necessity of eliminating barriers between ministries and local governments in managing affairs related to national strategic industries to ensure South Korea's competitiveness in the global economic landscape. Additionally, the presidential office aims to address consumer price inflation by establishing a new presidential body dedicated to maintaining the growth of the consumer price index below 3 percent, aligning with the 2.9 percent growth announced recently. The OECD's latest economic growth forecast for South Korea in 2024 has been raised to 2.6 percent, reflecting positive trends such as the recovery of goods exports like semiconductors and the domestic economic rebound driven by domestic consumption, the construction industry, and investment. Seoul noted that South Korea's exports from January to April saw a 9.7 percent increase compared to the previous year, with the April figure alone rising by 13.8 percent to reach $56.2 billion. This growth outlook surpasses that of countries with a gross national income per capita exceeding $20,000, with South Korea's GNI per capita standing at $33,745 as of 2023.
