1st court verdict for ex-DP leader on election law violation charges due in Oct.

Lee Jae-myung, the former leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, is set to attend a final court hearing in September for an alleged violation of election law. The hearing is expected to take place on September 6, following the interrogation of Lee in August and other necessary procedures. The Seoul Central District Court anticipates delivering a verdict around October, marking the first court ruling on allegations against Lee. The allegations against Lee include making false statements during the 2021 presidential campaign, where he denied knowledge of a deceased suspect who played a significant role in a development project and falsely claimed that special favors in a land development project were granted at the request of the land ministry. Lee is also facing trial on breach of trust and other corruption charges related to development projects in the city of Seongnam, stemming from his tenure as mayor. Despite narrowly losing the presidential race in March 2022, Lee resigned from his position as the Democratic Party's chairman to prepare for another term as party leader in an upcoming national convention in August, following the necessary resignation required under current party rules.
