Assembly split as Democratic Party of Korea snatches control of key committees

The People Power Party has expressed strong opposition to the Democratic Party of Korea's unilateral selection of committee chairs in the National Assembly. The Democratic Party, utilizing its majority, convened a plenary session and appointed chairs for 11 out of 18 committees without involving the ruling party. This action follows the previous exclusion of the ruling party in the election of the Assembly speaker, a first in the history of the Constitution. The ruling party has accused the Democratic Party of attempting to protect its leader, Rep. Lee Jae-myung, who is facing legal issues, and expressed concerns about the Democratic Party's potential to continue making unilateral decisions. The committees chosen by the Democratic Party to chair include the Legislative and Judiciary Committee and the House Steering Committee, both of which hold significant power in reviewing and approving bills. The ruling party emphasized that such exclusionary actions do not align with democratic principles and stated their refusal to participate in the Democratic Party's disregard for due process. The Democratic Party has threatened to take control of the remaining committee chair positions if the People Power Party does not comply with the appointments made. Additionally, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon has characterized the Democratic Party's actions as a strategy to support their leader's potential candidacy for the presidential election in three years, suggesting that the Assembly is being used as a tool for political gain.
