Daegu, North Gyeongsang to form unified provincial gov't in July 2026

Leaders from Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province have reached an agreement to establish an integrated provincial government by 2026, with the support of the central government. The decision was made during a meeting attended by key figures including the Daegu Mayor, the North Gyeongsang Governor, the Minister of the Interior and Safety, and the Chairman of the Presidential Committee for Decentralization and Balanced Development. They aim to enact a special law this year to launch the unified provincial government on July 1, 2026, and have committed to obtaining approval from the city council and the provincial assembly to push the project forward. The interior ministry has pledged to form a task force team and develop detailed support measures at the central government level to assist in the integration effort. The proposed integrated government would operate under a two-tier administrative system, with the prime minister overseeing it, and it would represent the first instance of administrative integration between wide-area local self-governments if realized.
