A group of North Korean defectors in Seoul attempted to send large balloons filled with K-pop and other South Korean cultural content across the border, some of which successfully entered North Korean airspace early Thursday, as reported by South Korean military authorities. The defector group, known as Fighters for Free North Korea, stated that they launched the balloons in retaliation for North Korea's recent actions of sending balloons filled with trash and propaganda into South Korea. The group criticized North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for disrespecting the South Korean people and declared their intent to counter with sending cultural content and truth to North Korea, including videos, anti-Kim regime leaflets, and US dollar bills inside the balloons. They also warned that unless Kim apologizes, they will continue their balloon launches. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol condemned North Korea's actions as a "despicable provocation" and expressed that a normal country would be ashamed of such behavior. The South Korean military confirmed that some balloons had reached North Korea and were closely monitoring for any possible response from Pyongyang. Additionally, after North Korea's announcement to cease balloon launches, South Korea suspended the September 19 Inter-Korean Military Agreement in its entirety for the time being, which had already been partially halted following North Korea's satellite launch.
