Democratic Party takes key Assembly committee chair posts

In the first plenary session of the 22nd National Assembly, the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea secured 11 out of 18 standing committee chair positions, including the crucial Legislation and Judiciary Committee and the House Steering Committee. This move was opposed by the ruling People Power Party, which boycotted the voting process. The Democratic Party currently holds the majority of seats in the 300-member parliament. The opposition-led Assembly's decision to elect Democratic Party members to key committee chair positions has sparked criticism from the conservative bloc, with accusations that the move aims to benefit Democratic Party leader Rep. Lee Jae-myung's potential candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. The ruling party emphasized the customary practice of the second-largest party heading the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and a lawmaker from the ruling party leading the House Steering Committee, highlighting their opposition to the recent appointments. This marks a significant departure from the previous Assembly, where the ruling party held key committee chair positions.
