Doosan chief, Kazakh president discuss key energy collaborations

Doosan Group Chairman Park Jeong-won held discussions with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana to explore potential collaboration in the energy sector. This meeting took place during the South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's official visit to Central Asia, where Chairman Park was part of the accompanying economic delegation. The focus of the discussions was on the modernization of Kazakhstan's aging thermal power plants, given the country's heavy reliance on this form of electricity generation and Doosan Group's expertise in the power generation sector. President Tokayev expressed specific interest in the Turkestan power plant being constructed by Doosan, emphasizing its priority and the full support for collaboration. Following the meeting, Doosan Enerbility solidified its partnership with Kazakhstan through a series of agreements, including a cooperation agreement and a memorandum of understanding with state-owned entities Samruk-Kazyna and Samruk Energy. These agreements aim to enhance Kazakhstan's power generation capabilities through talent development, technology exchange programs, and the supply of environmental equipment for both existing and new thermal power plants. Kazakhstan, which currently generates the majority of its electricity from fossil fuels, is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, emphasizing the promotion of energy diversification and renewable energy expansion. Last year, Doosan Enerbility secured a contract to build a 1,000-megawatt combined cycle power plant in Shymkent, reflecting the company's significant involvement in Kazakhstan's energy infrastructure development.
