DP reintroduces special probe bill on Marine's death in committee meeting despite PPP boycott

On June 9, 2024, a photo was captured of a banner commemorating the opening of the 22nd National Assembly on the front wall of the parliament in Seoul. Despite opposition from the ruling party, the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) proceeded with a parliamentary committee session to reintroduce a bill calling for a special counsel investigation into the military's handling of a Marine's death last year. The DP unilaterally convened a meeting of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, as lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) boycotted the session. The bill aims to investigate allegations of inappropriate interference by the presidential office and defense ministry in the Marine's death investigation. The DP-led bill had previously passed through the assembly but was vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol, prompting a revote. This session was boycotted by PPP lawmakers following the DP's unilateral selection of parliamentary committee chiefs. Additionally, the DP recently convened a plenary session and elected an opposition-leaning representative as the new Assembly speaker in the absence of the PPP, marking a significant event in South Korea's constitutional history. The DP holds 175 seats in the 300-seat National Assembly following a landslide victory in April's general elections.
