[From the Scene] Kakao’s first data center unveiled

Kakao, the Korean IT giant, recently revealed its first self-built data center in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, as a response to the severe server shutdown it experienced in October 2022. The data center, located on a 47,378-square-meter site at Hanyang University's ERICA campus, was constructed at a cost of 460 billion won and became operational in January. It has a capacity to accommodate 120,000 server units and store 6 exabytes of data, with plans for further expansion. The facility is equipped with safeguards against natural disasters and integrates renewable energy mechanisms and efficient waste management cycles. The company aims to enhance its AI capabilities with the construction of a new in-house artificial intelligence data center in the near future. Chung Shin-a, the first female CEO of the company, emphasized the focus on safety and stability in the new data center, citing the painful experience of a fire at a previous data center. The center is designed for nonstop operation and incorporates eco-friendly features such as solar heat for temperature control. Kakao also expressed its intention to open a part of the site for public tours, breaking away from the traditional closed image of data centers. The company's new goal is to bring technology closer to people and contribute to a better society through a focus on problem-solving, technology advancement, safe digital environments, and social value. Additionally, Kakao is looking to collaborate on AI chip development and has established an AI-only organization to oversee AI development.
