High schoolers' green startup Torus offers AI-powered food waste solution

US-based environmentally conscious startup Torus has announced that it has rolled out its food waste management service to 38 households in West Windsor, New Jersey. The service aims to connect food waste producers with composting companies using an AI-based matching system. This initiative, supported by Green Matters, a civic organization dedicated to environmental justice, has officially concluded, but Torus plans to sustain the project in the future. Established in December 2023 by Zikang Jiang, a student at the Lawrenceville School, Torus focuses on promoting eco-friendly campaigns and improving food waste management through AI-based technology. The team, comprising Jiang and his classmates, currently has 121 client partners and collaborates with five composting companies in New Jersey. Looking ahead, Torus intends to introduce incentives for third-party drivers to collect food waste, and plans to launch a subscription program where customers can sponsor meals for those in need through the food waste handling service. Jiang's inspiration for founding Torus stemmed from the realization that despite existing solutions, the US still wastes a significant amount of food while many Americans struggle with food insecurity. The team's aim is to bridge the gap between food waste solutions and waste generators, and they hope to contribute to addressing hunger by donating a portion of the service fee to charities.
