Hybe confirms Illit’s concert in Macau despite China’s restriction on K-pop gigs

Hybe has confirmed that Illit, a K-pop girl band under its music label Belift Lab, is set to perform at the Tencent Music Entertainment Awards in Macau, China, on July 19. The group announced their upcoming live performance through their official Weibo account, with a Hybe official also confirming their participation. This news follows concerns over Beijing's recent cancellation of a concert by Korean rock band Say Sue Me, raising hopes for a potential easing of China's restrictions on Korean musicians performing in the country. The reasons behind the cancellation of Say Sue Me's concert remain undisclosed, prompting speculation about potential influences such as differing attitudes towards cultural exchanges and the music genre. The confirmation of Illit's performance at the music festival in Macau has brought attention to the evolving landscape for K-pop artists in China. Despite the previous ban on K-content performances as a result of the Hanhanling policy, there is anticipation around potential shifts in China's stance towards Korean entertainment. Other K-pop stars set to participate in the Tencent Music Entertainment Awards include BoA, Epik High, ZeroBaseOne, Nmixx, NCT Wish, and Babymonster, highlighting the growing presence of K-pop in the region. These developments signal a potentially significant opening for Korean musicians in China, with ongoing interest in the evolving dynamics of cultural exchanges between the two countries.
