Hyundai hydrogen trucks hit 10m km of emission-free rides in Switzerland

Hyundai Motor Company's Xcient Fuel Cell, a hydrogen-powered truck, has achieved a significant milestone in Switzerland by surpassing 10 million kilometers in accumulated mileage. This achievement comes three years and eight months after the truck was first introduced to Swiss roads in October 2020. Currently, there are 48 Xcient Fuel Cells operating in Switzerland, equipped with a 180-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell system and a driving motor with a maximum output of 350 kW, allowing them to travel up to 400 km per charge. Hyundai Motor emphasized the environmental benefits of its hydrogen-powered trucks, highlighting their ability to reduce carbon emissions by only emitting water while driving, in contrast to diesel-powered trucks that produce carbon dioxide. The company also highlighted the environmental impact of its hydrogen trucks, stating that the 10 million km mileage achieved is equivalent to planting a 508-hectare forest with 700,000 pine trees. In comparison, diesel trucks driving the same distance would have emitted approximately 6,300 tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the amount absorbed by 700,000 pine trees aged 30 years in a year. Hyundai Motor plans to leverage the driving experiences and feedback from hydrogen truck drivers, along with the trucks' data, to advance its hydrogen fuel cell technology. Additionally, the company reaffirmed its commitment to hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and utilization, with plans to apply hydrogen technology to various vehicles as part of the transition to a hydrogen society, as announced at CES 2024 in January.
