ICT exports jump over 30% for 2nd consecutive month in May

In May, South Korea's exports of information and communication technology (ICT) products showed a significant increase for the second consecutive month, rising by more than 30 percent due to strong global demand. The country's outbound shipments of ICT products reached $19.05 billion, marking a 31.8 percent increase compared to the previous year. This growth resulted in a trade surplus of $7.57 billion in the sector, with chip exports and memory chips in particular experiencing substantial gains. Overseas sales to key markets such as China and Hong Kong, Vietnam, the United States, and the European Union also saw notable increases, while exports to Japan experienced a decline. Specifically, the surge in chip exports by 52.4 percent and memory chips by 101 percent was attributed to the growing demand for artificial intelligence and the recovery of the IT device market. Additionally, displays, mobile phones, and computers and peripherals also experienced increases in outbound shipments, while communications equipment exports declined. Notably, combined shipments to China and Hong Kong, as well as exports to Vietnam, the United States, and the European Union, all recorded significant growth, while exports to Japan saw a decrease. Overall, South Korea's ICT exports experienced robust growth in May, driven by strong demand for various ICT products in key global markets, resulting in a notable trade surplus in the sector. The surge in chip exports and memory chips, alongside increases in shipments to key markets, contributed to the overall positive performance of South Korea's ICT export sector.
