Korea cements ties with African nations in key mineral supply chains

South Korea and African nations have committed to strengthening collaboration to improve trade and support Africa's efforts in creating a sustainable future of shared prosperity. The 2024 South Korea-Africa Summit, the first of its kind between Korea and 48 African countries, began in Seoul, emphasizing the potential for mutual benefit through merging Africa's resource wealth with Korea's technological expertise. President Yoon Suk Yeol outlined the intention to leverage each other's strengths to achieve sustainable solutions during his opening speech. The summit recognized Africa's growing strategic importance due to its abundant natural resources essential for next-generation battery production. Although Africa's economic potential and growth rate have exceeded the global average, the level of cooperation between Korea and Africa has been relatively weak. President Yoon proposed forging economic partnership agreements to establish a mutually beneficial trade network and pledged support for the African Continental Free Trade Area. Additionally, he held talks with leaders of various African nations to pursue various trade, investment, and economic agreements. The Federation of Korean Industries highlighted opportunities for Korean companies in sectors crucial for Africa's growth, including manufacturing, energy, and green technology, underlining the potential for collaboration in eco-friendly industries like electric vehicles and ICT startups.
