[News Focus] As ruling party seeks new leader, will Han Dong-hoon enter fray?

Han Dong-hoon, the then-interim leader of the ruling People Power Party, led the party through the April election for the National Assembly and is reportedly considering running for the next leader of the party. Han, previously the justice minister and a close ally of President Yoon Suk Yeol, served as the party's interim leader for the last three months of the Assembly election season. He resigned from his position following the party's significant defeat in the election, as the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea retained majority control of the Assembly. If Han decides to pursue the top leadership position within the party, it is anticipated that this move could cause concern for President Yoon and his administration. Prior to entering politics, Han had a reputation for being closely associated with the president, having jointly led high-profile corruption investigations. However, during the Assembly election, the power struggle between the presidential office and the interim leader within the ruling party was exposed, particularly during the primaries where Han resisted nominations preferred by a party faction close to Yoon. After the election, the faction aligned with Yoon is reportedly losing influence, while other groupings are gaining prominence. Other prominent figures, besides Han, who are being considered to run for the party's next leader are those who have openly confronted the president. The ruling party's national convention for selecting the new leadership is scheduled to take place in July.
