Opposition ramps up calls for Yoon's impeachment

Opposition forces in South Korea are intensifying their efforts to push for an impeachment trial for President Yoon Suk Yeol, given the opposition's control of the National Assembly following the April general election. This pressure is driven by the opposition's persistent push to reintroduce a bill for a special counsel investigation into an alleged interference case involving the Marine Corps' internal investigation into the death of a Marine last summer. Lawmakers from the Democratic Party of Korea have openly suggested that evidence of Yoon's interference in the probe could lead to impeachment, citing concerns about abuse of power and alleged violations by the first lady. The push for impeachment gained momentum as a parliamentary petition calling for Yoon's removal, which also highlighted alleged violations and neglect of duties, garnered over 100,000 signatures within four days of becoming public. Yoon's political opponents suspect that he may have interfered in the investigation to protect a Marine Corps commander and previously vetoed a special bill proposed by the opposition bloc. Additionally, a poll revealed that Yoon's approval rating remained low, adding to the challenges he faces in maintaining public support.
