Putin’s Pyongyang trip highlights need for bond in isolation

Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming visit to North Korea is seen as a sign of mutual interest in strengthening ties between the two countries, both of which are facing isolation from the West. This visit, which could occur at any time according to Seoul authorities, marks a significant development in the relationship between the two nations. The last time Putin visited Pyongyang was in 2000, and since then, both North Korea and Russia have become increasingly isolated in the international arena due to sanctions and severed ties with Western powers. The potential meeting between Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is seen as a reciprocal gesture in response to North Korea's support for Russia during the war in Ukraine. While the two countries may currently bond over their shared isolation, experts believe that the duration of their partnership will be influenced by the outcome of the Ukraine war. There are also indications that North Korea and Russia may seek to formalize their relationship through a new legal basis, potentially leading to a written agreement outlining the direction and vision of their bilateral relations. Additionally, there are suggestions that North Korea is seeking assistance from Russia for its weapons and space programs, while showcasing its diplomatic achievements. This aligns with reports that North Korea has provided weapons to Russia in exchange for assistance, including advice on launching a military reconnaissance satellite.
