Rival parties clash over selecting standing committee chiefs

The two major political parties are currently in a dispute over the selection of committee heads for the 22nd National Assembly. The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea, which holds the majority in the parliament, submitted a list of its nominees for the heads and members of the standing committees. This move was met with criticism from the ruling People Power Party, which boycotted the process by not submitting its own nominee list. The committees, particularly the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, play a crucial role in evaluating and approving bills before they are voted on in the plenary session. The Democratic Party has nominated its own representative as the chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, and has called for cooperation from the ruling party to create a functional National Assembly. The ruling People Power Party emphasized the tradition of the second largest party holding key committee chair positions, including the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. They expressed discontent with the Democratic Party's unilateral submission of nominees and stressed the long-standing principle of the second-largest party members assuming these positions. The Democratic Party plans to request approval for its nominee list in the upcoming plenary session, while the ruling party highlights the customary practice of the party with the most parliamentary seats taking the speaker position.
