S. Korea's imports of crude oil fall 2.5% in 2023


In 2023, South Korea's crude oil imports decreased by 2.5% compared to the previous year, amounting to 1.01 billion barrels. The Korea National Oil Corp. reported that the decline in imports was attributed to reduced consumption of petroleum products. The data also revealed that the Middle East's share of South Korea's crude oil imports increased to 71.9% in 2023 from 67.4% in 2022, indicating a growing dependency on Middle Eastern oil following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, South Korea imported 372 million barrels of petroleum products in 2023, with naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas accounting for 64.5% and 26.4% of the total imports, respectively. The Korea National Oil Corp., located in Ulsan, approximately 300 kilometers south of Seoul, provided data showing a 2.5% decrease in South Korea's crude oil imports in 2023. This decline was attributed to reduced consumption of petroleum products. The data also indicated that the Middle East's share of South Korea's crude oil imports increased to 71.9% in 2023 from 67.4% in 2022, reflecting a heightened reliance on Middle Eastern oil following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Furthermore, South Korea imported 372 million barrels of petroleum products in 2023, with naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas constituting 64.5% and 26.4% of the total imports, respectively.
