Samsung out to reclaim foldable crown

Competition in the rapidly growing market for foldable smartphones is intensifying, with Samsung Electronics aiming to reclaim its market leadership with a new series of foldable phones next month. Meanwhile, Chinese competitors are striving to narrow the gap and challenge Samsung's dominance in the sector. Lenovo-owned Motorola is reportedly on track to launch its new flagship foldable phone, the Razr 50 Ultra, in the coming month, having obtained certification from the Chinese government. The Razr 50 Ultra is anticipated to retain the design of its predecessor while delivering significant performance improvements, including a larger external screen and enhanced cameras. In a surprising development, Huawei Technologies surpassed Samsung to become the world's top-selling vendor of foldable smartphones in the first quarter, marking the first time that the US-sanctioned Chinese company has led in this segment. Huawei's success was driven in part by its new fifth-generation network models, with the majority of its foldable shipments being 5G-enabled. Samsung, which had previously dominated the sector, is aiming to reclaim the top spot with the launch of its new foldable smartphone series, the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Z Fold6, at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event in Paris, France, with the event likely to take place on July 10. The new foldable phones are expected to address the shortcomings identified in their predecessors.
